Auditions: Cappella Pratensis
(Deputy List)
Role description
We are delighted to announce an open call for auditions on the 28th of October 2026, with successful applicants being added to our deputy list. The following voice-types will be considered:
- High falsettists (“superius”)
- High tenors and low falsettists comfortable switching registers (“altus”)
- Low tenors and baritones (“tenor”)
- Low basses (“bassus”)
With roughly forty concerts per year, the ensemble is frequently in need of replacement singers and, as one of the only professional ensembles in the world to sing Renaissance and Medieval music directly from historical (mensural) notation, Cappella Pratensis provides an exciting opportunity for professional development within the world of historically informed performance practice.
We ask applicants to submit the following:
- A CV detailing their professional experience
- A short description of their experience singing from mensural notation
- A recording of themselves singing a piece of Renaissance polyphony or a duet in a one-per-part setting
- A recording of themselves singing the plainchant hymn "Ave Maris Stella" from a source of your choice (either modern or historical.)
Recordings do not need to be professional recordings, but can be simply made on your phone.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate the following:
- Fluency in performing from mensural notation
- Experience as a professional singer
- Interest and experience in historical performance practice, particularly of Renaissance and Medieval music
Applicants will spend the afternoon (roughly 12:00-17:00) sight reading from mensural notation alongside members of the ensemble, discussing performance practice, and socializing together. Lunch as well as coffee and snacks will be provided.
The auditions will take place on the 28th of October 2026 at Theater de Nieuwe Schuur (Burgemeester Buijsstraat 33, 5255 AB Heusden) near our home-town of ‘s-Hertogenbosch. Reasonably priced accommodation is available in the theater itself on a first-come-first-served basis (to be requested through Cappella Pratensis,) and there are plenty of hotels in the local area. The venue itself is a 20-minute journey from ‘s-Hertogenbosch by bus or car.
The deadline for applications is the 1st of August 2026. Please send all the information requested, as well as any questions, to info@cappellapratensis.nl
